MSHR: Advocating Stateless Children's Rights

MSHR is deeply concerned about the plight of stateless children, particularly their profound challenges in accessing basic education. As an extension of our Seaweed Cultivation and Health Awareness Program on Omadal Island, Sabah, we stand in solidarity with NGOs such as Iskul Sama Dilaut Omadal, dedicated to providing education to vulnerable stateless children, especially those from the Bajau Laut community.

Before ‘Iskul’, or ‘school’ in the Bajau Laut language, none of these children had access to education due to their stateless status. Iskul’s dedication to providing education to vulnerable and stateless children, particularly those from the Bajau Laut community, is commendable. MSHR passionately advocates for education access and the protection and support of education spaces for all children, aligning with Iskul’s mission to ensure every child, irrespective of background, has the fundamental right to education.

Recognising its transformative impact, MSHR also actively participates in Iskul’s community-based programs, benefiting both Pulau Omadal residents and the Bajau Laut community. Despite encountering challenges such as navigating misconceptions, MSHR stands resolutely in support of Iskul’s educators and their dedication to providing education devoid of discrimination. We advocate for unified efforts to ensure the safe operation of Iskul and the well-being of its teachers, emphasising the significance of understanding and collaboration.

From advocacy for education access to active collaboration and endorsement of Iskul’s initiatives, MSHR is committed to enabling a brighter future for the children of Pulau Omadal. Together with Iskul, we aim to foster a community that values education, diversity, and to secure and protect the fundamental rights of every child to learn and grow.
